Martin Gilbert is the Vice Chairman of Standard Life Aberdeen plc and Chairman of Aberdeen Standard Investments, the group's asset management arm. Standard Life Aberdeen, formed in August 2017 through the merger of Aberdeen Asset Management PLC and Standard Life plc, is a prominent global investment company. Having co-founded Aberdeen Asset Management in 1983, Martin served as its Chief Executive. Under his leadership, Aberdeen emerged as a global leading independent asset manager, achieving this through organic growth and strategic acquisitions. Martin also serves as the Chairman of the UK's Prudential Regulation Authority’s Practitioner Panel. He is a member of the International Advisory Panel of the Monetary Authority of Singapore and the International Advisory Board of British American Business. Additionally, he holds the position of Senior Independent Director at Glencore plc. From January 2016 to October 2018, Martin was the Deputy Chairman of SKY PLC having joined the Board in 2011. He became the Chairman of FirstGroup, between 1995 and 2013 having been a director since it was formed in 1989. Martin's significant contributions to the financial industry earned him recognition, including the Personality of the Year award at the City AM Awards in 2017 and the title of Asset Management CEO of the Year at the Global Investor Awards the following year. He holds honorary degrees from the University of Aberdeen and Heriot-Watt University and serves as an Adjunct Professor of Finance at Imperial College Business School. Born in Malaysia, Martin Gilbert earned an MA in accountancy and a law degree from the University of Aberdeen. After becoming a chartered accountant with Deloitte, he joined the investment department of local law firm Brander & Cruikshank, which later became Aberdeen Asset Management.
